Demon Thief by Darren Shan
3.0

It is undeniable that Darren Shan is one of the masters of the horror genre.

In the second book of the Demonata series, we follow Cornelius "Kernel" Fleck, a young boy with severe depression who also has the magical ability to see pulsing lights everywhere he goes, which he can manipulate into gateways between worlds. Though at first he doesn't quite understand what this is supposed to mean, seeing a demon enter his world and steal away his baby brother... well, Kernel doesn't have much time to figure it out.

This was another re-read for me because I read the entire series as a child, although I remembered less about this one than I do some of the others. There is a great deal more POC representation in this book too, and it is done well. The gruesome depictions of torture and the careful manipulation of character is ever present, and despite being somewhat more predictable, it is still a must read for any horror fans.
