This book is a thoughtful survey of the global trends that have all fed into climate change. It is extremely helpful to highlight first and foremost the role of increased consumption, primarily among OECD nations with the US as a dominant over-consumer, rather than opening with the typical signs of environmental damage and statistics about warming and species loss. The framing was new to me and a convincing way of highlighting the role of “less” as an elegant climate solution.
While I generally appreciated this book greatly, it did seem to focus too heavily on individual action and scientific innovation at times. There were many clear acknowledgements throughout of the role of capitalist consumer culture in driving climate change, however there was quite minimal talk of the policy choices behind many of these trends. Perhaps forgivable in the context of a book of this survey nature, but a clear omission throughout.
