Cinder & Ella
by Kelly Oram
Do you ever read a book and it comes out completely different than you first thought? I thought this was going to be a light frothy read that would be little more than entertainment and it ended up breaking my heart.
WHAT I LIKED: The emotional turmoil that Ella went through as a character is both heart wrenching and a relief. It’s not often in public media that a disabled character is presented in a favorable light. She thought of herself as ugly and undeserving of love- from anyone. Cinder, as she always knew him, and her new friends, proved otherwise. Then there were the dynamics of the other characters- her father, stepmother, and stepsisters to be the most important. They all had clear, easy to understand motivations in their interactions with Ella.
WHAT I DIDN'T LIKE: ugh- the heartbreak. I was sobbing through the second half of this book. To put your characters through so much should be a crime (kidding, not kidding). The main thing that I didn't like was that it was so short. I wish we could have seen Ella more happy.
4.5 STARS
