La Belle Sauvage
by Philip Pullman
After almost 15 years since I finished reading His Dark Materials for the first time, it was just such a wonderful experience to be back in Lyra’s world again full of faeries, daemons and dust.
However, did I like La Belle Sauvage as much as the Golden Compass/Northern Lights? The answer is NO WAY. The story isn’t as captivating and the characters aren’t as intriguing. It doesn’t help that the book takes such a long time to get going.
Regardless, there are some things I liked: The villains in this story are excellent: Non-stereotyoical and interesting but at the same time incredibly repulsive. I also enjoyed the writing and how eerie and dark it becomes over the course of the novel. The characters in La Belle sauvage are compelling. I cared about them, including Lyra herself even who isn’t more than just a little baby in this book.
Still, I felt like La Belle Sauvage doesn’t offer the reader much. It just felt like part of a longer novel and not much happening, whereas every book in His Dark Materials had its own story arc. I hope this will change with the next book in the series and that things will pick up more from there, because even after finishing La Belle Sauvage I still don’t really know where this story is even supposed to go.
I thought this book was okay but I didn’t love it which is disappointing. Of course I will still read everything that Pullman ever publishes and I am looking forward to the next instalment in the book of dust. I just hope that this series finds its way out of His Dark Material’s shadow and stands on its own because so far it doesn't.
