For some reason, I went into this one expecting a lighthearted, sweet-and-spicy read—and while there were moments like that, this book ended up being so much more. It's heavy. The mechanics of vampirism are pretty unique here, and I think it's also a pretty clear political analogy about how marginalized communities are treated. Given the state of our current political climate, that made this book hit me even harder.

I loved how our two MCs come together and work through their grief and loss. I appreciated that nothing was sugarcoated. The good guys don’t always win. Sometimes it’s one step forward and two steps back. Sometimes you make what you think is the right choice, and it turns out to be the wrong one—and it’s devastating. And sometimes, you consciously make the wrong choice because the cost of doing the right thing is just too high. The world isn’t black and white—it’s all shades of gray—and this book does a fantastic job of showing that.

This is the first book I’ve read in the series, and it works perfectly as a standalone. I’m absolutely rearranging my TBR to bump the rest of the series up, and I highly recommend checking this one out.

Thank you so much to the author for the advanced copy—this book absolutely blew me away.
