The Reformatory by Tananarive Due
5.0

12 year old Robert Stephens, Jr has just been sentenced to six months at the Gracetown School for Boys, a reformatory, after defending his older sister, Gloria, by kicking the son of the largest landowner in town. While at Gracetown, Robert not only witnesses but also becomes a victim to the horrors of racism and injustice, both for the living and the dead.

This was such a heavy, heartbreaking read, but Tananarive Due did an outstanding job weaving together historical facts and her own family history to shed light on the infamous Dozier School for Boys.

If you are a fan of historical fiction, please give this a read. It’s a hefty book, but you will not regret it.
