De Profundis by Oscar Wilde

5.0

Well, this book was first presented to me as "gay drama", but how wrong I was about it, how simplistic my standpoint was. Yes, it depicts the affair between Oscar Wilde and Lord Alfred Douglas, but it goes way beyond it.
"De Profundis", literally understood as "a heartfelt cry of appeal expressing deep feelings of sorrow or anguish", shows us the different stages on dealing and accepting a bad relationship, a toxic one, one that takes everything away from you and makes you wonder endlessly about each small detail of the time you've spent together with that someone.
In my case, this book became one of my favorite ever... maybe because, as Wilde, I tend to be 'too nice' and so I fully understand why and how he kept such a relationship that he knew, since the very beginning that would ruin him; and also 'too instropective', which makes me question everything, at any time, with any sort of correlation (or not!). I felt understood, empathetic and sad.
Overall, I do believe it is a great book that we should all read, because it will make us see things on different perspective and it will also keep us capable of remembering Oscar Wilde and his beautiful works.
