Finding Me by Viola Davis

5.0

Very honest look at both the highs and lows of life from a great actress who has experienced extremes on both ends. The first portion of this book put me off a bit because Davis leans pretty heavily into some self-psychoanalysis, which I’m typically not a big fan of. By the end of this book, though, after hearing her story, I realized that this framework has helped her grow into the woman she is today. It doesn’t matter if I prefer that framework or bot because it’s been useful for her. Despite that initial response, I found her unflinching look at her life to be captivating, frequently jarring, occasionally funny, and always real. The best memoirs help you understand the life experience and choices of someone who had a very different life from your own and Ms. Davis has succeeded in that regard. Well worth a read.
