If You Could See the Sun by Ann Liang
5.0
I absolutely loved this book!
I feel like Alice was incredibly relatable as a American Chinese, studying in Beijing. Her story and determination throughout the book was developed well. I found I could relate to her more than I realized, despite not being the top student in school any point.
Henry fell a little flat in the beginning, painted simply as Alice’s rival, but I quickly loved him after the plot had been established and we got more info on him and his life on the other side.
Liang’s writing is simple and beautiful. She writes topics that can be written more in depth, but as a YA novel wasn’t brushed aside as often as I’ve read in other novels. I think she did wonderful in writing Alice’s experience moving back from the US and China, and how it affected more than just her but her parents.
