‘Oak desperately wants to stop Cardan from talking, but short of kicking him or throwing something at his head, he has no idea how’ - Holly Black 🗡️

I was so excited for an adult fantasy from Holly Black - and even better a spin off from The Folk of the Air trilogy! So I’m disappointed I didn’t fall in love with this new duology 😕

I loved Wren in book 1 (Stolen Heir) but we got so little of her in this second book. This book would’ve greatly benefited from her POV but I do understand what Black was trying to do giving them each their own book 💙

Oak didn’t hit for me…and any hint of romance was so underwhelming. The only scenes that peaked my attention were the brief cameos of Cardan and Jude - it kinda made me hate Oak a little 🙊

Maybe it didn’t help listening via audio but it felt like there was very little plot. Maybe it’s because I didn’t feel depth in any characters. Everything was very surface level. It was fine, I just had high hopes 🤷🏻‍♀️
