Partials by Dan Wells

This was another worth reading YA novel. It has a smart, capable female lead character, and the other characters also seem well developed. Its dystopian, which I often like (though its been overdone to death in recent years), and takes the occasional swipe at consumer society which I also like - how the pre-holocaustian world was hung up on owning stuff, and now the survivors had their pick of the wardrobes and devices and useless objects of that old civilisation, and had little use for it, and large corporations - setting their own agendas to suit their commercial ends, without the consent or knowledge of government.

I liked that the solution to the virus which was the secondary threat they were facing in this dystopian world was one based on parsing the virus and working through the logic of identification and sampling.
I liked the twist at the end, which was a complete surprise and a great idea, and I like the fact that the obvious romantic interest for Kira somehow doesn't feel right for her, which is so often the case in real life. We are also not sure whether the senate is manipulating information for the good of the society or for its own ends, and there are some interesting conversations amongst the characters along those lines.

I think I like books that introduce critical thinking to their audience of Young Adults in this way, its painless and valuable, I think, and models the sort of intelligent interactions that we all hope that they might partake of one day. So this makes it just a bit better than just an exciting read, and it is that too.
