Monstress, Vol. 5: Warchild by Marjorie Liu, Sana Takeda

3.0

I'm not sure about this series anymore. Or at least the first 2-3 issues really grated on me because it became this endless cycle of just misery and violence and people dying and the cynicism about it is not my thing anymore. Of course, I can understand that that's the way of war and cruelty, but still, it's hard for me to respond to it with a different mood than exhaustion. Then the second part of it became a bit better.

I loved Corvin in this and I do like him more and more. I don't know what I think about Maika anymore, to be quite honest. Bettani, Corvin's sister, is one of the few characters that actually make sense to me emotionally, and I rather loved her.

At least this volume was a bit more focused than the last one and the sides and the factions felt a bit more clear. Though there were still some characters where I went 'huh, how do they fit in?'

Kippa is a precious lemondrop who still needs to be protected at all costs. Her wholesomeness and big heart are maybe the one thing that is keeping me from abandoning this series by now.
Spoiler I'm just super sad that Kippa's kindness led to a lot of death and destruction. I hate that so much

The art is still great and I was super into the final panel. That brings me hope for what comes next.
