this book was phenomenal. i finished it in one sitting, and then I had to let it sit with me for a bit before sitting down to write this review, because there is a lot to process.

all of the characters are playing mind games with each other and with you, the reader, and each pov pretty much tells the same story but with more and more added and changed each time until it finally unravels into the truth and we are thrusted into the catastrophic ending.

there's a lot of underlying commentary on motherhood in the book, and manami and her relationship with her mother is directly juxtaposed with shuya and his. in a way, most of the characters were driven to do the terrible things they did in some way by love, either the excess of it or the desire for it.

i don't usually reach for thrillers in a bookshop, and when i do read them they do the job they were designed to do, deliver their twist and then fade quickly out of my memory. but this one will sit with me a while
