Foul Heart Huntsman by Chloe Gong

adventurous tense fast-paced

3.5

Hey look, if you are similarly invested in this series as me but are *not* me, you’re probably going to love this book. It has so much action, the plot ist twisting and turning, the suspense is never ending. But the romance is also romancing real hard and that grew too much for me to bear - very clearly a “me not you” issue. So far in this series, Chloe Gong has managed what very few authors have in recent years: woed me into liking her romance plots. It’s unfortunate that this time it was just a little too much for me.

The problem is, that there were just soooo many romantic plots and subplots going on! Previously, the focus was on one main plot with a cute little sideplot (which I usually also wasn’t that big on but whatever, it was just a tiny sideplot so who cares?) but this time every single character needed sooo much romantic drama, all of which needed to end happily. It was sickeningly saccharine. That’s another problem I had: the ending just was too happy. Everything conveniently worked out (don’t think about it too much) and all is well!!! Sure, Phoebe was captured for several days and unconscious for at least a couple of them, but noo, they didn’t work out her identity in that time & totally believed that her identity remained a mystery to Silas before she somehow managed to escape? Seriously? Everyone is miraculously healed, everyone gets away, even the main antagonist gets a redemption arc in the end. Urgh, just… give me consequences, please.

Anyway, I loved the other books in this world and this one is an unfortunate outlier. I’m crossing my fingers for everyone else that they don’t run into the same problems that I have and can enjoy this book as the awesome ending it deserves to be.
