Chain of Thorns by Cassandra Clare

3.0

2.5 stars. okay now that it’s been a few days since I finished, I’ve thought about what I liked and didn’t like about chain of thorns:

1) the character dynamics were really well done, i loved the individual character and ship moments

2) but after how long we waited for this book and everything that cc had said that implied it was going to be heartbreaking and very emotional, it really wasn’t. I mean christopher’s death was very upsetting but again he wasn’t a MAIN main character, and with the stakes being so high cause they were literally facing a prince of hell, i expected a lot more heartbreak and emotional impact, but literally ONE main character died.

3) and the way christopher’s death was dealt with? we barely saw any reactions from cecily and gabriel or will and tessa, and generally it was just very rushed and he wasn’t given a proper goodbye.
For the whole series, the parents characters weren’t handled well cause we already know those characters from tid, and i dont think cc is used to having a cast of main characters that aren’t orphans and have parents to notice things, cause some of the the things that went unnoticed by our tid parents were just blasphemous.

4) the epilogue however was pretty good, I liked the way everyone said goodbye to one thing in the past that they didn’t want to bring in the future and the way there was a huge familial feeling in the ending.

5) the love triangle was SO unnecessary. Like it was clear from the start that herondaisy was going to end up together but also the way the love triangle was done was just really annoying. and cc had implied that this love triangle was going to be so different from the rest of her love triangles, so we all assumed (and had enough proof) that matthew was in love with james. nope. just same old typical love triangle.
I usually don’t mind the love triangles in tsc: in tmi the love triangle was also like this, but that can be excused cause it was cc’s first series. herongraystairs in tid was VERY well done, and in tda the love triangle between mark emma and julian was fake and the one between kieran mark and cristina turned poly which I loved. But the love triangle in tlh really pissed me off and was just really boring and added nothing.

6)cc had also said that this epilogue was going to so much more heartbreaking that even cp2. WHERE??? This was literally the happiest epilogue ever which I didn’t mind at all but still

So yeah as a conclusion, the whole series had a LOT of potential but cc went and dropped it at the last book. I would have expected something like this from tmi, but with how much cc has grown as a writer i expected a lot more for this book, and sadly it just wasn’t amazing or memorable
The whole problem for tlh is that cc had built up our expectations and didnt fulfil any of them, like for the love triangle and the epilogue. I feel like if you’re writing a high stakes book, you should be prepared to kill off any character and generally cause pain to your readers, which cc should be prepared to do after writing 3 major series. Dont get me wrong, Im happy they all got happy endings, but wheres the gut punch?? The heartbreak?? So anyways long story short I’m definitely disappointed and hope she does twp justice
