The Nineties by Chuck Klosterman

informative reflective slow-paced

3.5

i feel the pain of everyone, then i feel nothing

very usa based and while parts of pop culture and politics were globally relevant i wish i’d skipped the sports chapter_s but also felt like i wanted the whole experience of the big picture he was painting. very helpful in kind of beginning to understand ~recent history~ and to understand gen x a lot better

and also just interesting to immerse myself in a world that i only briefly lived in 👧

content warnings - a lot of very very messed up things that happened in the 90s in and around the usa.

a few tidbits/moments that made me go !!
- every description of 90s homophobia & ignorance of sexual assault as a serious topic
-every description of court cases
-the matrix was always a trans movie, the scenes w one trans character were kicked out by production
-apparently people (rightly) dislike american beauty, can someone pls tell everyone who rated it 5 stars on letterboxd?? cc@ filmbros
-you were charged a fee if you decided not to have your number in the directory (compared in the book to doxxing issues now)
-‘how was it possible […] to reject the illusion of advertising if their only concept of authenticity had been constructed by advertising?’
-‘if an apple computer thought it was 1900, would it somehow believe it had not yet been invented?’ (on y2k)
