A cute story that's part coming of age, part slice of life. There aren't immense obstacles in Kiki's path to living in Koriko; the various episodes of her settling there are sweet and not extremely difficult to overcome, but they show that you don't necessarily have to be magical to find a way to deal with the problems ahead of you.
I'd probably recommend it more for a 9 year old than a 12 year old, but across the board, it's a very relaxing and enjoyable little adventure. It will be especially nice if it's read to a child, because the episodic nature of the adventures makes it possible to split the book into reasonable chunks.
