THIS REVIEW IS SPECIFICALLY FOR THE AUDIOBOOK VERSION
Had I had a physical copy I think it would have rated higher on my list, as the actual plot of 'What happened to Maddy Clare?' was compelling, intriguing and staged well, albeit quite slow paced. The characters were written well and I felt a little bit of genuine fear hearing some of the things that were happening that you know full well can't be explained logically.
BUT. The narrator of the audiobook was incredibly over-expressive, adding drama where there genuinely didn't need to be it. I mean, I get that you're ghost hunting, but every minute of every day doesn't have to be incredibly tense and on edge! It kind of spoilt it for me, and I was at least half way through before I actually felt the desire to keep listening once I'd finished a chapter.
Also, the overall story, in my opinion, didn't need the romance: it was featured a little too heavily for my liking. A little bit had a place, but it mostly felt forced unfortunately.
I would recommend a physical/e-Book version, but personally don't recommend the audiobook.
