Ducks: Two Years in the Oil Sands
by Kate Beaton
challenging
dark
emotional
reflective
sad
slow-paced
A harrowing graphic novel that's overwhelmingly lonely. Beaton portrays the oil sands as a place of isolation with insular communities of mostly men, with no protection from the trauma they face and little care for the environment. It's a story of how corporations exploit people and land, not caring for the destruction they cause. The simplistic art style concisely got the emotions across.
Graphic: Misogyny, Rape, Sexual harassment
Moderate: Animal death, Drug abuse
