Re-reading this after finishing the CRUEL SHIFTERVERSE made me realize just how bad those books are. Don’t get me wrong, this is still a bad book with bad world building, clunky dialogue, flat characters, one-note tension—but it seems that after writing this story for six books previously (it is LITERALLY the exact same set up in this book and her previous ones), she figured out how to (almost) avoid the worst of her writing sins. Or maybe these books have rotted away the last pieces of my good sense.
