Unravel Me by Becka Mack Book Review - Series Playing for Keeps
3/5-star rating Would I recommend this book? Yes and no. Yes, to the people who love long reads with a found family dynamic, including hockey stars and immature or funny/explicit scenes. No, to the people who think reading about a hockey love story, over 500 pages, is longer than need be. With a little bit too much force on the repetitive dialogue and too soon in the intimate category. Though I loved this book, I think the author forced too much into it. I felt like 18 hours for an audiobook is already long enough but make it a book where the characters don't change in development or size, the plot shares multiple scenes, and unneeded content is 40% of the book, you won't want to read it. I finished this book because it's part of the series, and at first, I WAS engaged. But a turn off for me was (1) the FMC and MMC becoming friends so quickly, leading to intimate moments with no real love or connection. (2) The FMC has a son, Connor, and the boy took one look at Adam and said "dada", like... wtf? (3) A lot of pieces in the book were repetitive, especially the conversations and speeches. It was like reading the same sentence again, and again, and again. I liked the characters, but they just weren't lovable enough to give the book a better rating. Most of the time my ratings go off the characters, plot, and length. This book just wasn't giving any of that. And a lot of the side characters felt more like background characters. The hockey team and their moments were the only thing making this book a good read. I felt like we were missing moments and given scenes, like an accusation of Adam being a baby daddy, that didn't need to be placed in there. I felt like after a while the book lost its map and was sailing out to sea with no island in sight. Overall, I just wasn't into it like I hoped. I was rooting for this one, but I couldn't give it more than 3 stars. Would I recommend this? Yes, to those who like the author, the series, the characters, and the found family dynamic. But not for those who like more adventure, less drama, and uninterrupted ads.
