The Island by Victoria Hislop

My reasons for reading this book seemed a bit suspect to me. I had only picked it up because friends of mine had just been in Greece (is that a rationale for reading something?) and I have an interest in leprosy. I know, that is a bit weird, but I have been curious about Hansen's disease since childhood.

So, I read some reviews. I did not find them to be compelling, but figured what was one more book for our vacation. My husband expects a heavy box of books.

I am so glad I went on to read this. It fulfilled my expectations of a good book. I got transported to a place I have never been (or will go); I learned a whole lot about Crete World War II and leprosy and I found the characters fascinating. If you read to be transported, to meet new people or learn new things, I highly recommend this story.
