The Captain's Harvest

While I cannot verify 100% that this is the end of the series, The Captain’s Harvest has the feel of a proper closing. Even though I still had a few questions after reading this book, the biggest questions that have been around since the beginning of the series have been answered. I was completely satisfied with this book, and even though I want more of the Captain and his men, I would be okay with the series ending here. Of course, if I’m wrong and there is more, BRING IT ON!
After finally settling on a planet and finding a way to grow their food, the crew of the Prayer are settling in nicely. They have plans for a new holiday to mark their accomplishments. Things seem to be going well, except for one problem: the Captain’s life-prolonging medication is running out, and he’s starting to feel the pain of his advanced age. Having kept this a secret from most of the crew, the others are surprised when they learn the truth, and they’ll do whatever they must to make sure their Captain stays young and energetic.
What I loved about this series was the relationships between all the men as they discovered each other. While they are all in a relationship with the Captain, they do begin to pair off in a way to have a closer bond with one of the other men. Seeing those connections made the story even stronger. In this final book, Echo really had a chance to shine. He has been my favorite character throughout, and seeing him come to life more on these pages, and learning more about his backstory, was the icing on the cake. I also began to understand the relationship between Echo and Antoine, which was detailed even given the short length of the story.
There are scenes that I wish were longer, and more detail would have been better. However, as I said, this was a satisfying book and if it is the end, I am okay with it. Since the series is so short, I can just go back and reread them all in a day or two!
If you have not read the rest of this series, I urge you to do so before reading this book. Events and relationships continue from the previous books. Given that the stories are so short, it won’t take long to catch up. You can also purchase the first four books in one collection (I have the paperback!). I highly recommend this series if you are into science fiction and poly relationships. It’s a fun—and hot—read!
