Diary of a Wimpy Kid by Jeff Kinney
2.0

Genre: Fiction
(Free Choice)

Reading Time: 2 hours

Summary: Greg chronicles a year of his life in middle school in words and drawings. He deals with family, bullies, his best friend, and teachers.

Potential Problems: This book has a LOT of potential moral issues when presented to a child reader. Middle school is portrayed as a place full of bullies where nothing is more important than being popular. The protagonist, Greg, displays numerous behaviors and attitudes I wouldn't want my child to emulate, among them: dishonesty, rudeness, selfishness, and materialism.

Opinion: I had a very hard time figuring out how I feel about this book. Overall I think I feel disappointed. The beginning of the book got my hopes high because the writing style and the voice of the character, even the drawings, were so fresh and humorous. I thought the whole book was going to be hilarious. But it got really old, really fast. And at the end you realize that Greg isn't a very good kid. I know middle schoolers are still trying to figure things out, but Greg doesn't seem to have much of a moral compass at all. He just makes his sarcastic comments about everything, complains and whines, is never happy, and does whatever he wants to benefit himself. That is what made me not like the book as much and give it only 2 stars.
