Crush by Richard Siken

5.0

I was particularly transfixed by Siken’s fixations on light, naming, and his hands. When Siken mentions these three recurring elements, it feels like the only moment of respite among the frenzy of panic and high vulnerability in the poems. I can’t imagine these poems read aloud. Instead, I picture a man standing still with his eyes shifting back and forth looking filled with anxiety, maybe waiting for someone in the audience to ask if he’s okay. Very raw, and captures the feeling of internalized emotions shockingly well. 5 Stars because “Visible World” made me cry. A great collection here.
