Peeny Butter Fudge

A sweet, lovely story that will also resonate in the nostalgia department for a lot of adults.
The story is that of children left with their Grandmother while Mom is gone for the day. In the opening illustration we see Mom has left a schedule (and menu) on the refrigerator. Nana, of course, makes sure the children are well-cared for but branches off into her own activities and food choices.
The entire story is about the special love and bond that exist between grandparents and grandchildren. With fewer discipline worries and responsibilities there is a freedom on both sides of the grandparent relationship to let go a little bit of the regular rules (biscuits, ham and lemonade for lunch instead of the fishsticks, peas and carrot sticks on Mom's list)and revel in the pure enjoyment of being together.
For me it brought back memories first of my Grandfather (gone these past 5 years) jumping rope with us and my father shaking his head and saying his father never did that with him, and then of my father with my children at the MN STate Fair buying them more ride tickets in a single afternoon than he purchased for my sister and I in all our childhood years combined.
Jon Cepeda's bold, colorful illustrations mirror the joy of the text. When Nana makes Peeny Butter Fudge with the children I see my mother baking cakes and cookies with my children. The recipe at the end of the book for the Peeny Butter Fudge suggests that this story is interwoven in the lives of Toni Morrison and her son Slade in the same way it intertwined with my memories when i read it.
A young reader will delight in identifying the Nana of the story with his or her own grandparent relationship. This story is undiluted joy for young and old alike.
