When the Stars Go Dark by Paula McLain

4.0

Anna is a detective specializing in the disappearance of children. After suffering a recent tragedy of her own and a rough childhood, she goes to Mendocino to help in the case of a missing girl. Anna needs to heal from her own mental demons while not becoming too involved in the case.

I really enjoyed this book. This is a slow burn suspense/crime/mystery. While you keep turning the pages to find out if they find the missing girl, this book is largely character driven. The reader is left somewhat blind as to who Anna is and what happened in her past?

This whodunnit could have been too drawn out, but the beautiful writing and imagery kept my interest and led me to be very invested and guessing until the end.
