The Memory Collectors
by Dete Meserve
2.5 stars for me rounded up to 3. light spoilers ahead.
Overall this book was just ok. had amazing potential, but honestly fell very flat.
We have Aeon Expeditions, the way to travel back in time for one hour of your life. The astronomical 6 figure price tag is so outrageous I don't understand how they have a waiting list, or this many people "jumping" back into time at once.
We have 4 POVs in this book, and I love a good multiple POV story.
Elizabeth who wants to see her son just one more time since he passed away 3 years ago
Brooke who wants to see her husband and child hopefully before the mistake that they can't seem to forgive her for, she also can't forgive herself
Logan who wants to climb a mountain, swim, ride a bike, surf, do any of the things he did before he was in a wheelchair
Andy who is hoping to see the lost love from 3 years ago
The catch with Aeon is that they can't send you to a specific time or place, it's just random, so you are paying a fortune to go back to 1 hour any time in your life.
All of our characters just happen to go back to the same date, their lives intertwine, this is explained in the synopsis of the book, you find out pretty early on how all but one of them tie together. I do appreciate the author not sitting on this for suspense sake.
Their ties unfortunately don't save their characters. Logan while understandably angry for what happens to him in the future is so unlikeable that when Meserve tries to turn him into a more likeable character I just can't really get on board with him being this person.
Brooke while she feels bad for what happened, she is so out of touch with reality in my opinion she isn't much better than Logan, intentional or not, she comes across and incredibly selfish in the start.
Elizabeth is so lost in grief I can't begin to understand I have no opinion of her really.
Andy, he is searching for a girl he only knew for 5 days. How are you so hung up on a girl who ghosted you 3 years ago after just 5 days???
As the story progresses and you find more about the past, you see that even though these 4 know they can't change the future, they try to do what they can, because after all they should have only been here for 1 hour, and it's going on 5 days. So if they are stuck here, they want to try to change things for the new potential future.
What this book does deliver that will round up to 3 stars is that fate is fate. You can't change what happens in life sometimes, but what you can change is you, your mindset and how you deal with the shit storm life hands you.
