Olga Dies Dreaming by Xochitl Gonzalez

4.0

I couldn't put this down. Xochitl Gonzalez wrote with such consideration and understanding of the complexity of being Latinx in the U.S. and all the different types of people who make up Puerto Rican identity. I was grateful for diverse identities. Queerness shows up in a truthful way. Broken mother-child relationships. Struggles with addiction. The impact of HIV/AIDS. A devastating natural disaster and the failure of the U.S. to help. I wish I had a CW for sexual assault prior to the read, but Gonzalez writes this piece with grace. It is not put right before you so blatantly. But allow this to be a CW for you, that it appears toward the last 1/4.

I wish I could give Xochitl Gonzalez a hug and thank her for adding so much to the Latinx discourse. These characters are complex and really grasp a perspective of Latinx life. I'm grateful for this fictional peek into a Puerto Rican family.
