Denison Avenue

“We seem to be all fighting for something to call home…I know now that this city and its people have a way of forgetting about you”
Wong Cho Sum loses her husband, her language is becoming obsolete, and slowly all the shops near her home are closing down to make room for big box stores.
I don’t know how else to describe this book other than by calling it authentic. Following Cho Sum as she navigates grief and I can literally feel her sadness and her fear. Yet still we get to experience these moments of community and happiness as she continues her journey.
The prose of this story is absolutely gorgeous. It’s a really unique blend of traditional storytelling and poetic verse that really adds to the beauty of the overall story. I really loved being able to read the dialogue in Cho Sum’s native language, with the English translation that follows.
Don’t get me started on the illustrations! They add so much to the story! Not only can you read the experiences of Cho Sum but you also get to visually see the world that she is living in.
Seriously this book is so gorgeous, it’s going to stick with me for a really long time. A thousand stars to this book, it truly is a masterpiece.
