The Rainfall Market
by You Yeong-Gwang
⭐️ 3.5/5
☔️ synopsis: serin (FL), a teenage girl who receives a mysterious golden ticket to the rainfall market, a magical place said to grant you the life you’ve always dreamed of. this is a golden opportunity for serin who is struggling deeply after the loss of her father and the sudden disappearance of her sister and best friend. it feels like a chance to finally escape her grief and find peace.
at the market, serin is greeted by dokkaebi, human-like creatures who manage the rainfall market, each on of them have a different role they fulfil.
with issha by her side a cat-like companion , she begins a journey to transform her life and discover the secret to true happiness. but even in a place as magical as the rainfall Market, things don’t always go according to plan, because, well, life still happens.
☔️ thoughts: i truly enjoyed this book. it was fast-paced and the short chapters made it easy to get swept into serin’s whimsical journey. as a debut novel from You Yeong-Gwang, it left a good impression. the story gave me Studio Ghibli vibes, nostalgic, cozy and full of gentle magic realism.
while it’s clearly aimed at a young adult audience and sometimes felt a bit too youthful in tone, i believe that with a little imagination, readers of any age can find something to love here. the last part of the book was my favourite. that’s where everything came together, and the author’s message landed beautifully.
it was heartfelt and uplifting without ever feeling forced, just warm and quietly reassuring. a gentle, healing story.
if you enjoy “healing fiction” or stories that glow with a quiet kind of magic, the rainfall market is definitely worth a read. i’ll be keeping an eye out for more from this author!
