Reading for the first time in 2024 so some of the romance tropes from the 1990's are there. The setting is 15-16th Century England and Scotland which is a little earlier than the historical romances I normally read. This didn't worry with speaking customs from that time so that wasn't an issue (sometimes it makes reading a chore).  Miscommunication is the prevailing trope and, as usual, it can be frustrating but it serves the plot. The threat of violence against women is throughout, and CONTENT WARNING there is the rape of a supporting character towards the end.
