Don't Fear the Reaper
by Stephen Graham Jones
I expected the scares and gore (of which there is pleeenty), but I didn't expect the depths Jones delves into his characters' traumas after the events of My Heart is a Chainsaw - this makes the S1 stakes in this book higher, which is important given that we get a good number of character introductions we know only exist so we know who died (sometimes a page later). this is an excellent follow-up that builds on the concerns of the first while maintaining the humor and shock. I read the last chapters with a delighted smile plastered across my face (sometimes paired with some cringing shoulders). and the nerve - the introduction of Dark Mills South feels like it could be its own book, but Jones slams it all into one go-for-broke chapter. I will follow SGJ anywhere - he's the real deal. bring on #3.
