The Republic
by Plato
dark
medium-paced
Yikes. Very glad I now know what Plato was talking about, but also disturbed by what Plato was talking about.
I enjoyed the structure, it was fun to read the dialogue. Although it is also annoying to have some other character simply saying “yes, I agree, you are correct”. Not much of a discussion more of a lecture with a constantly agreeable audience.

The main thing I enjoyed was the elaboration of the question from Adeimantus of “How can you prove that Justice is better than injustice?”. Very good question, not well answered.
I wish Socrates (Plato) were less patriarchal, ableist, and essentialist.
But funny that Plato was so against the accumulation of wealth. We carried on the Patriarchy, Ableism, Eugenics, Meritocracy and ADDED ON CAPITALISM! I wonder how the Western world would be described in the ‘Imperfect Societies’ section.
In general, I am disappointed by the idea that humanity is inherently evil and must be controlled by ‘just’ rulers. Much of the argument is to prove that ‘Justice’ leads to ‘happiness’, yet there is never the thought of ‘what makes the most people happy?’. Maybe that is Justice.
