Jesus and Women by Niamh Middleton

adventurous challenging informative reflective medium-paced

5.0

When I saw this book 3 things caught my eye:
1️⃣ The cover - how eyecatching is it!
2️⃣ The word 'Feminism'
3️⃣ The word 'Jesus'

... and the fact 2 and 3 appeared together on the same page of an iconic looking cover.

Growing up, I went to faith primary schools and on occasion Church, but by the middle of secondary school... I was questioning everything about the world around me, and I became interested in Feminism.

One of the things I struggled with was how women fitted within religion and the antiquated views that some members held on women.

Well, this book stirred up that questioning, and I dived in.

This book is utterly fascinating, and you can tell that Niamh has put a lot of time and effort into researching, dafting and editing this book.

She is not condescending in tone and instead takes on a conversational manner, much like you hear in a seminar.

Niamh offers you food for thought on topics such as evolution, women in Genesis, the bible as a woman in the bible, and (interestingly) women's role within the church.

I loved how Niamh has a chat ro you about a subject and uses the bible to support what she is saying. One topic that stuck in my mind was the section about adultery and how men's charges were different to women's, with women being property. She then retells stories from the bible to supplement what she has said.

It is an utterly fascinatingly, brilliant book that, as a woman, really does make you think about your role and how these have changed (and must change!) With the times.

I feel religious and non-religious readers will both enjoy this and take something away from it.

Highly recommend!
