This book was surprisingly enjoyable for me. I understand the critiques about how depression and suicide are portrayed (many folks feel that it’s rather nonchalant), but personally I related to the wry humor and self-deprecating nature around it. I think what comes off as shockingly casual to one person may just resonate well with another. Past that, there were a few things that felt contrived and predictable, and I think that’s a fair complaint from folks as well. That said, I enjoyed many of the characterizations within, the sense of humor, some of the underlying themes, and the setting quite a bit. I’d definitely read more of the author’s work.
TW for depression and suicide. I’d recommend this to folks that like contemporary literary fiction.
