At the moment of their crimes, mass shooters usually have suffered trauma. They’ve experienced an existential and often suicidal crisis in the days and weeks leading up to the shootings. They’ve searched for validation for their feelings and have found it in America’s cultural script for mass violence: its long history of firearm-enabled violence, its values of rugged individualism and success at any cost, and the words and deeds of mass shooters past and present. And they’ve had the opportunity to shoot, often because of lax gun laws.”
