His To Keep by Vivian Wood

2.0

I really struggle with my rating. Whilst the overall writing was good enough for 4 stars the hero was so totally unlikable I just could not 'get into' the book.

Connor is entitled, nasty, arrogant and selfish. I found it totally unbelievable that he was an ex Navy Seal. For me that was an unnecessary and pointless addition to the book. This guy only thought about himself - he would never have survived the training or being in the Seal's if he wasn't a total team player. Was I seriously meant to accept that a man who had done several tours of duty (and as a seal these would have involved fighting and death) would (a) get engaged so his dad would give him a job, and (b) stick with said job when it became clear he was just the company poster boy. Connor's unpleasant father was NOT an excuse or reason for his nastiness.

Whilst I liked Sam and she wasn't cowed by Mr Unpleasant why did she bother? I would have respected her more if her motivation that kept her going was needing the money. Connor may have been sexy as hell but once you spent time with him he became less and less attractive so I don't understand Sam falling for him.

The author did an excellent job of writing such an unappealing hero and I can only assume this was deliberate. Both characters were consistent in their personality and actions, the actual story flowed well and was easy to read, the plot (Connor aside) was good, as was the pace. If the hero had ANY redeeming features I would have really enjoyed this book.
