The Tamer Tamed; or, The Woman's Prize by Gary Taylor, Celia Daileader

4.0

Fletcher had only been writing solo plays a short while but this one really works. A sort of sequel to The Taming of the Shrew, it shows a calm and intelligent woman dealing with the power imbalance in marriage and arrive at something very close to a companionate relationship. Sub-plots explore other aspects of marital relationships, and the routine misogyny of Early Modern comedy is much more restrained than usual. Very enjoyable.
