The Mountains Sing by Nguyễn Phan Quế Mai
5.0
Sweeping, moving and profound
An astonishing novel, tracing the family of Grandma Tran Dieu Lan through the unfolding history, war and tradegy of Vietnam.
The book is imbued with sadness and is profoundly moving. Yet, the stoicism and resilience of the family, inspired by Grandma Dieu Lan, is testament to the human spirit. To not give up, even when faced by the most horrific of tragic situations. It is also an indictment on the nature of mankind, the desire for power and control, the imposition of dogma and doctrine and the insistence of ideology.
A beautifully written book, powerful and sad, but the message of hope, love and humanity shines through.
