Interesting and pretty quick read, but I kinda reject the premise. I think the depiction of the degradation into “savagery” without the crutch of western society exacerbates problematic views of indigenous populations. Western society isn’t the only form of society. In fact, I feel like the values extolled by individualism in Western society are precisely the reason for the boys’ transition to violence. If these boys were raised in conjunction with nature and an emphasis on collective care, like indigenous communities, there’s no way this would’ve happened.
