Flower Garden by Shirley Jackson
5.0
Jackson's short stories always depict such a vivid image of a part of life, and this one especially so. Flower Garden tells the story of a woman desperate for a life different from her own, and when a new neighbor moves in, their friendship shows her a glimpse of the life she wanted for herself. But when the friend makes friends with a local black family, the woman pulls away, fearing social stigma, and the reader is left to watch with horror as the woman slowly becomes the stuffy and prejudiced side of society that she and we despise.
It was so sad to read, but short stories are so much more poignant when they paint harsh realities and depressing endings. This story has been playing over and over in my head all day and will stick with me much longer.
