Emily of New Moon by L.M. Montgomery
4.0
First time reading this aloud to my girls. I can't remember the last time I read it for myself (whenever it was, it was before I started keeping a list on Goodreads).
I don't understand why Anne gets all the attention; Emily is a well-drawn, lovable, loyal, and spirited heroine in her own right. (So, powers that be, STOP adapting Anne and get on to some of Montgomery's other works. I love Anne too, but there are so many other great stories!)
Montgomery does get carried away with poetic descriptions and adjectives sometimes, but that's part of what makes her the author she is. This one is a little darker than the early Anne stories, with characters that have a little more "history" and some deeper hurts, but the four kids - Emily, Teddy, Perry, and Ilse along with the trio of adults, Aunt Elizabeth, Aunt Laura, and Cousin Jimmy, - make this a moving story of friendship, understanding, and pursuing what we were created to be and do.
