Coffee - lots of coffee. Krueger weaves in all the faves - Henry Meloux, Rainy, Cork, Steven, Jenny, Daniel, WaBoo. Only Anne, Rose and Mel are missing.
The story? A man appears at Sam’s Place saying he is looking for his wife. Claims that she is shacking up with Henry Meloux. Cork agrees to help the man for a fee - heads to Henry’s cabin only to find the woman who is looking for her husband. He is not the man that spoke to Cork.
Thus begins a multi day hunt through the woods with Henry, Rainy and Dolores Morriseau pursued by a group of men who seem to believe that Dolores holds information they need.
Mercenaries, including an Ojibwe man who respects Henry’s tracking abilities so much that he learns from Henry and moves away from the mercenary side.
The plot involves water rights and an upcoming conference that will change access to water and disrupt the native lands in Canada and the United States. Dolores’ husband is helping a group that plans to disrupt the conference - but they are being thwarted by powerful people who intend to make money from the rape of the land and pillaging of water. Krueger includes some history of the people of Shoal Lake and the Canadian govt siphoning off their water.
