The Testaments by Margaret Atwood
4.0

I realized at the end that I definitely should have re-read Handmaid's Tale before reading this, because I did not suspect that the Handmaid mother of the two girls might have been Offred (...I couldn't remember what ended up happening to her at the end of the Handmaid's Tale... I can only really remember what happened in the show, to be honest).

Anyway. It wasn't nearly as captivating at the Handmaid's Tale, obviously. The climax felt like it needed something--everything seemed too easy. Our characters made a plan, and then they executed it. Very little went wrong, and given that each section of the narrative is titled "witness testimony", you already know that both girls survive.
I'm not sure why Becka had to die, though. Did she intend to drown in the cistern, or was that an accident...? Because it seemed like an accident, and that's just frustratingly sad.

Anyway. The first book is worth rereading--this one isn't. But it was still fun, even though it was clearly only made as a cash grab because the show was so successful...
