The Blood of an Englishman
by M.C. Beaton
I really really want to like Agatha Raisin.
Despite my neutral reception to the 4-5 Agatha Raisin novels I've tried in the past, I keep coming back to her. Mostly because I've read the Hamish Macbeth series multiple times and really want more M.C. Beaton. I also enjoy her Edwardian Mystery series and her infinite romance novels.
Be that as it may, I really can't get myself to care about Agatha. There's nothing wrong with the writing here, I just personally don't really feel positively or negatively about her main character. This is supposed to be a mystery series, but I don't feel like Agatha cares much for her job. Furthermore, especially in this installment, I'm a little tired of hearing about how empty Agatha feels without a man. I love when authors add romance in their mystery novels, but it seemed like Agatha barely had a second thought aside from that.
I'm a stubborn reader. I know I'll read more eventually. But I'm really bummed that I don't like this series more. Charles is a great character. I might continue reading just for him to be honest.
