Lamb: The Gospel According to Biff, Christ's Childhood Pal by Christopher Moore

Did not finish book.

1.0

I really, really wanted to like this. I tried super hard. If I had read it about 10 years ago, maybe I would have enjoyed it, but this book is now 18 years old and it hasn't held up. It relies on cheap jokes that follow a predictable formula and use Judaism as a punchline. This book comes from the dying era when insensitively joking about races, cultures, and religions other than your own was still socially acceptable. There are more than a few cringeworthy scenes in here, and none of them are the so-called "blasphemous" scenes that one might expect a Christian to be bothered by. Instead I'm bothered by the overt casual racism and sexism and the air of white supremacy that underlies the whole thing. It's just gross. I gave up completely at the almost halfway point, when I just couldn't take the racism anymore. It was bleeding out of the text itself, but the audio reader was only too happy to participate and worsen it with his racist approximation of Asian accents.

Do yourself a favor and skip this one. I'm sure it was a smashingly funny, "edgy" hit in 2002 when it was published, but it's not anymore. It just doesn't stand the test of time.
