The Graveyard Book Graphic Novel, Volume 1 by P. Craig Russell, Neil Gaiman
5.0

Though I read the original book several years ago, I had almost no recollection of...any of it, really. Revisiting this was more like reading it for the first time, especially given that it's in graphic novel form. Surprising, given how much I enjoyed it back when I DID read it. It's kind of cool though, because how often do we wish we could read a book again for the first time but obviously can't? Even though I have before, it feels like I haven't, so I'm learning everything at the same time as our main character, Bod.

Anyway, volume one was actually quite lovely. There's something oddly riveting about reading a book set in a graveyard. One might find it disturbing, even morbid. I found it rather relaxing, and calming. The setting is probably what sets this book apart from the rest. And the way it's illustrated leaves me longing to jump inside the pages and explore it myself. It looks so peaceful. I could exercise so much creativity there, if it were real.

Bod is a curious little boy. Though he's mostly obedient, sometimes his curiosity leads him astray. This was the case more than once in this volume alone. But he means well. He's so young, and his upbringing is certainly unorthodox. Naturally, he's doing the best he can within his means. I love the friendships he made, especially with Liza. He's loyal and brave, and although he doesn't always think things through, he always learns his lesson in the end.

I'm curious about Silas, and I want to know what happens next with the man Jack. Why is Bod so important? I have no recollection of where this story goes, how it ends. Hopefully volume 2 will answer some more of my questions, while at the same time providing me with more entertainment regarding Bod's exploits in the graveyard. I'm sure he'll get into more trouble. Each chapter follows a singular storyline that can still be interconnected with the overall plot of the book, and I really enjoy that about it. It definitely starts off on a dark note, but it's also fun and carefree. As always Neil Gaiman is the mastermind behind writing brilliant books that appeal equally to adults and children. With all that in mind, I give this book five stars.
