These Hollow Vows by Lexi Ryan
3.0

I saw this book all over booktok and the cover sparked my interest. I have been told that it is similar to Acotar and judging by the cover and seeing a Walmart version of Tamlin and Rhys, I pretty much figured it on my own. The book was disappointing and the main character was insufferable.

Let me briefly tell you what you will be faced with in the book: A *17* year old girl, who has all the characteristics of a pick me girl is caught in a love triangle, in a political conflict, all while trying to save someone dear to her. While the plot may have potential it is overshadowed by poor writing and plagiarism. The main character has a lot of emotions, mostly hatred, that are not well explained. Why does she hate the fae so badly? Why does she hate her mother WHEN SHE CLEARLY REMEMBERS HER MAKING A BARGAIN WITH SOMEONE TO SAVE BRIE’S LIFE??? Like I figured it out immediately!! Nothing makes sense about her feeling and to top it all off, Sebastian is an insufferable git that is a walking red flag! Finn, his gang, and the last 5 or so chapters are the only thing I enjoyed about the book. Like the last chapters contain the only moments when Abriella uses her brain and has a badass moment.

Now about the plagiarism, I can name a lot of similitudes with Sarah J Maas’ books, especially Acotar. Staring strong with the sisters that are poor and the main character has to develop a unique skill (being a good thief~archery) to survive. Then her sister is taken away by a fae king and she has to save her (sounds to me like Feyre being kidnapped by Tamlin). The two love interests are the carbon copy, from looks to personality, of Tamlin and Rhys. Abriella has a shadow power inherited from a fae just like Feyre with the high lords powers. There is also a curse present that no one can talk about and everything is glamored so that Brie doesn’t learn the truth. She is the chosen one and has to retrieve 3 artefacts(and Finn helps her) just like Feyre was the chosen one and competed in the three trials with the help of Rhys. Abriella’s trip to the Serenity palace, a palace by the sea, to retrieve a book of old spells, looks to me like Feyre going to Adriatta, in the Summer Court to get the book of Breathings. The goblin is like the Suriel, Sebastian betrays her like Tamlin and the list goes on and on with the similitudes.

The last chapter sparked my interest and I want to read the sequel because I think it will tap more into the badass side of Abriella and her new strong power. Although being like Acotar I can already tell you how it will end.

Overall, I gave it a three because I didn’t despise it but I wouldn’t recommend it to someone else. Read at your own risk.
