My first Steinbeck and I have to say I was not disappointed. He is the reason I love early 20th century American authors. Capturing the great depression in a way I have never felt it before, he gives the time an emotion. It's hard to express what this emotion is exactly but it is distinctly American. A hope that never quite goes out even in a time of such great poverty, a satisfaction with the community your in, the pure joy of living a day where you can do what you want even if it's a terrible decision. I hope to read at least one more book by him this year and I'll be glad if it evokes a similar feeling for me.
